Awards 2022 - Presidents Welcome

Dear Meraloma Cricket Club members and supporters, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 34th year of Meraloma Cricket and our 2022 Awards Night. We also celebrate our return to Moose’s Downunder–one of our most loyal sponsors and supporters!

2022 was almost a regular league season complete with BCMCL shenanigans, violence, mat vandalism, long grass and extremely poor LBW decisions.

In terms of membership, we again had a strong year with 137 members including 20senior women, 68 BCMCL seniors, and 48juniors including 17 Kangas and 31 junior hardball players in the U14 and U17 BCMCL league, plus one associate member!

In the BCMCL league competition, our teams all finished in the low middle of the pack–with some good wins and close losses. Batting was our area of, ahem, opportunity–especially at the start of the season. We also saw some outstanding individual performances with two centuries and two six-wicket-plus hauls. Congratulations to all.

In 2022, after a whole lot of lobbying, wewere granted an additional BCMCL teamour 5th--in division 9. We had a greatstarting season and the team was led inoutstanding fashion byLaura Jones withgreat assistance from Norm Baldwin &Adam Harvey.

Women’s cricket continues to develop withseveral good events run this season including women’s participation in the Over40s competition at Stanley Park. A big thanks to Carly Barrett for a tremendous organizational effort again this season! Meraloma Women formed the backbone ofthe BC side in the nationals in Toronto thisAugust: Manasa Challa, Kate Gray, Belinda Williams, Tanvi Vaidyanathan, Sadia Razique, and Kishani James all ably represented BC. Two of our players were selected in the national squad in 2022: Kate and Manasa–great work!

Also congratulations to another Kanga graduate, Finley Dixon, who has been selected for the BC U17 team.

Our junior program continues to grow and prosper due to the tireless efforts of Damienne and Iain. Big thanks also to the members who have contributed to junior coaching this season.

I would like to pay tribute to our dedicated captains, coaches and committee members who volunteer their valuable time to ru nthe club, agonize over selections, harass members for dues, pay the bills, take the minutes, write the reports, send out the emails, make the trophies, argue with the league, and much more.

And finally, it is the spirit of Loma cricket that continues to set the highest standard no matter where or who we play. I am very old-fashioned when it comes to cricket: I believe that the way you play the game reflects your character. Cricket is a great leveler–it lets us meet people from all walks of life and right across our community. Let us celebrate tonight all that is great about the Meraloma Cricket Club.

Once a Loma, always a Loma!
